The khaen is the bamboo mouth-organ that defines Lao folk music — sixteen reed pipes, played by blowing and sucking like a harmonica. Leuth's father is a khaen master in a Vientiane suburb. He'll show you how it's made, play a few traditional tunes, and walk you through your first tune. Slow and steady. By the end of two hours you'll be able to play something simple.
