How to Book Laos Train Tickets in 2026 (The Honest Guide)
Everything you actually need to know to book Laos-China Railway tickets in 2026 — the official app, third-party sites, the ticket office, and what to do when seats sell out.
The Laos-China Railway changed travel here permanently. A trip that used to take ten hours on a minivan now takes one hour and fifty minutes on a train moving at 160 km/h. The catch? Booking the ticket is harder than the journey itself.
This guide is what we wish someone had handed us in 2022. It's current as of 2026, written from Vientiane, and tested every week by people who actually live here.
The four ways to buy a ticket
- The official LCR app — cheapest, but requires a Lao phone number to register.
- Online via third-party booking sites — easy, in English, costs a small fee on top.
- At the official station ticket window — possible, but the queues are real and seats often gone.
- Through a Lao agency or hotel — adds a service charge but solves the language problem.
Most travelers should book online a few weeks ahead. Tickets only release three days before departure on the official channel, and popular routes — Vientiane to Luang Prabang especially — sell out within hours on weekends.
Why booking is awkward in the first place
The LCR is operated by a Lao-Chinese joint venture. The official ticketing system was built for residents, not tourists. The app interface is in Lao and Chinese. Account registration requires a Lao mobile number. Payment defaults to UnionPay, WeChat, Alipay, or BCEL One — none of which most foreign travelers have.
In other words, the system works beautifully if you live here. If you're flying in from London, you need a workaround.
How far in advance to book
For weekend trains on the Vientiane–Luang Prabang line, book the moment tickets release. For weekday trains, you usually have more room. In the green season (June to October) demand is lower across the board.
Orchao books train tickets directly for travelers — in English, paid by card. If the booking dance isn't how you want to spend your first day in Laos, that's what we're here for.
